Background Materials on Product Traceability

Tracking Labels for Children's Products
The US CPSC currently has a request for comments and information out with respect to the tracking labels for children's products under Section 103 of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act. The law requires, to the extent practicable, the placement of permanent, distinguishing marks on children's products and packaging to enable:

    (A) The manufacturer to ascertain the location and date of production of the product, cohort information (including the batch, run number, or other identifying characteristic), and any other information determined by the manufacturer to facilitate ascertaining the specific source of the product by reference to those marks; and

    (B) The ultimate purchaser to ascertain the manufacturer or private labeler, location and date of production of the product, and cohort information (including batch, run number, or other identifying characteristic).

The notice of inquiry can be accessed here. The deadline for comments is the 27th of April 2009

Feasibility Study: Post-manufacturing Traceability System between the PRC and the EU

This study, carried out during 2008, focuses on the commercial, technical, legal and political feasibility of a post-manufacturing traceability system along the supply chain between the People’s Republic of China and the European Union.  The traceability system would cover product quality, safety, authenticity, compliance as well as the manufacturing process, environmental impact and CSR-related issues. The study highlights the fundamentals needed for such a system to be launched, operated and sustained over the mid- to long-term.
